Rather than being sent directly to Vietnam, the author arrives in Munich, Germany on Thanksgiving Day, 1967. He is absorbed into the Survey Squad as the lowest member of the group. He discovers alcohol, prostitution, black market activities and the autobahn. The unit is rotated back to the US, then back to Germany and back again.
