And everywhere \u200baround \u200byou, fellow author friends are \u200bposting \u200bon \u200bsocial \u200bmedia \u200bthat \u200bthey \u200bmade \u200bit, \u200bthey \u200bdid \u200bit. \u200bThey \u200bwrote \u200b50,000 \u200bwords \u200bin \u200ba \u200bsingle \u200bmonth.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bYou&#8217;re \u200bhappy \u200bfor \u200bthem, \u200bof \u200bcourse<\/p>\n<p>But \u200byou \u200bdidn&#8217;t \u200bquite \u200bmake \u200bit yourself.<\/p>\n<p>So what do you do?<\/p>\n<p>Do you hang your head in shame and despair?<\/p>\n<p>I say no.<\/p>\n<h3>You, see, I\u2019m a writer who has not won NaNoWriMo 2023.<\/h3>\n<p>(Notice that I didn\u2019t say \u201cfailed.\u201d I purposely used the term \u201cnot won.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m writing this on November 30, 2023, knowing that my NaNoWriMo stats are currently sitting at about 15,633 words for this year\u2019s project; and also that they have been sitting at that count for the past two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>I got off track. I got side-tracked\/side-lined, knocked out of the game. However you want to put it, I neglected to get those words done.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time I haven\u2019t made it to 50,000 words for NaNoWriMo. And it likely won\u2019t be the last.<\/p>\n<p>But what I\u2019m doing, and what I hope you do if you\u2019re in a similar boat as me, is not to think of that lack of hitting the NaNoWriMo goal as a failure.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at what we accomplished. And let\u2019s also look at how we can learn from this experience.<\/p>\n<p>One \u200bof \u200bthe \u200bwonderful \u200bthings \u200babout \u200bNaNoWriMo \u200bis \u200bthere&#8217;s \u200bthis \u200bhuge \u200bcommunity \u200bof \u200bauthors \u200bfrom \u200baround \u200bthe \u200bworld, \u200bregardless \u200bof \u200btheir \u200bexperience as \u200bwriters, \u200bif \u200bthis \u200bis \u200bthe \u200bfirst \u200bbook \u200bthey&#8217;ve \u200bwanted \u200bto \u200bwrite, \u200bor \u200bit&#8217;s \u200bthe \u200bhundredth \u200bbook \u200bthey&#8217;ve \u200bwanted \u200bto \u200bwrite, \u200bthey&#8217;re \u200ball \u200bin \u200bthe \u200bsame \u200bboat, \u200band all have a common \u200ba \u200bdeadline.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bWe&#8217;re all \u200bgoing \u200bto \u200bsit \u200bdown, \u200bbutt \u200band \u200bchair, \u200bfingers \u200bon \u200bkeyboard, \u200bor \u200bhowever \u200bit \u200bis \u200bthat \u200byou \u200bprefer to write. \u200bAnd \u200bwe&#8217;re \u200bgoing \u200bto try to \u200bget \u200b50,000 \u200bnew words \u200bwritten. That sense of community and mutual support is fantastic. \u200bWhen \u200bwe \u200bthink \u200babout \u200bhow \u200bisolated \u200bwe \u200bare \u200bas \u200bwriters, \u200bthat \u200bwe \u200bcan \u200bdo \u200bsomething like this \u200band \u200bfeel \u200bpart \u200bof \u200ba \u200blarger \u200bcommunity \u200bin \u200bthe \u200bact \u200bof \u200bwriting \u200bitself, \u200bit can be quite powerful.<\/p>\n<p>So, even if we didn\u2019t get to 50,000, we did something as part of a larger group. And that\u2019s got to count for something. And hey, just like there are a ton of writers who hit that goal, there are also another ton of writers like us, who didn\u2019t make it.<\/p>\n<h3>It\u2019s okay. There\u2019s still something to celebrate.<\/h3>\n<p>\u200b\u200b\u200bThe \u200bvery \u200bfirst \u200bthing \u200bto \u200backnowledge \u200bis \u200bthat \u200byou \u200b\u200bcommitted \u200bto \u200bdoing \u200bsomething. \u200bYou \u200bmay \u200bnot \u200bhave \u200bactually achieved the initial goal, \u200byou \u200bmay \u200bnot \u200bhave \u200bfinished \u200bit, \u200bbut \u200byou \u200bcommitted \u200bto \u200bsomething. \u200bYou \u200btook \u200bit \u200bseriously \u200benough \u200bthat \u200byou \u200bsigned \u200bup \u200bto \u200bsay, \u200b\u201cI&#8217;m \u200bgoing \u200bto \u200bget \u200bthis \u200bdone.\u201d \u200bYeah, \u200bokay, \u200byou \u200bdidn&#8217;t \u200bget \u200bit \u200bdone. \u200bBut \u200bthat \u200bfirst \u200bstep \u200bis \u200bthe \u200bcommitment, \u200band \u200bthat&#8217;s \u200ban \u200bimportant \u200bfirst \u200bstep \u200bfor \u200bwriters. Such a critical first step. \u200bWhether \u200bit&#8217;s, \u200bagain, \u200byour \u200bfirst \u200bbook, \u200bor \u200bwhether \u200bit&#8217;s \u200bthe \u200b100th \u200bbook \u200bthat \u200byou&#8217;ve \u200bwritten, \u200bcommitting \u200bto \u200bgetting \u200bit \u200bdone \u200bis \u200bimportant. The act of writing \u200bdown \u200bthose \u200bgoals, \u200beven \u200bif \u200bit&#8217;s \u200ba \u200bdigital \u200bwriting \u200bdown \u200bonline, is one of the most important first steps for a writer.<\/p>\n<p>And first steps are hard. So kudos on taking that step. You all know what they say about a journey of a thousand miles. It doesn\u2019t start until that first step.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bThe \u200bsecond \u200bthing \u200bis, \u200beven \u200bif \u200byou \u200bonly \u200bsat \u200bdown \u200bonce to write in the past thirty days; \u200beven \u200bif \u200byou only \u200bwrote \u200bone \u200bsentence, or perhaps just a few \u200bwords or maybe even just a title, \u200byou&#8217;re \u200bahead. It\u2019s a small measure, but you&#8217;re \u200bactually \u200bahead \u200bof \u200bwhere \u200byou \u200bwere before \u200bwhen \u200bit \u200bwas \u200bjust \u200ban \u200bidea \u200bthat \u200byou \u200bwanted \u200bto \u200bdo \u200bthis, \u200bthat \u200byou \u200bwanted \u200bto \u200bwrite, \u200bthat \u200byou \u200bwanted \u200bto \u200bget \u200ba \u200bbook written.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bAnd \u200bI \u200bknow \u200bit \u200bseems a little \u200bpatronizing \u200b\u200bof \u200bme \u200bto \u200bsay, \u200b\u201coh \u200byeah, \u200bgreat, \u200byou&#8217;re \u200bthree \u200bwords \u200bahead \u200bbecause \u200byou \u200bwrote \u200bthree \u200bwords \u200bthis \u200bmonth.\u201d \u200bBut \u200bthe \u200breality \u200bis\u2014\u200band \u200bI \u200bgo \u200bback \u200bto \u200bthe \u200bclassic \u200bbook \u200bfor \u200bwriters, \u200bAnne Lamott\u2019s <strong>Bird \u200bby \u200bBird<\/strong>, \u200b\u200bis that \u200bwe \u200bdo \u200bget \u200bthere \u200bword \u200bby \u200bword. \u200bWe \u200bget \u200bthere \u200blittle \u200bby \u200blittle, \u200bin \u200bsmall \u200bsteps \u200bthat can take a long time.<\/p>\n<h3>My very first NaNoWriMo experience in 2006, I only got 20,000 words written.<\/h3>\n<p>And I never actually completed and published the book I\u2019d been working on until 10 years later. But that book <strong>never<\/strong> would have been written, and never would have been published in 2016 if I hadn\u2019t committed to doing it; regardless of the fact I didn\u2019t win NaNoWriMo 2006, nor how long that entire process took me.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u200bThis \u200bis \u200ba \u200breminder \u200bthat \u200bit&#8217;s \u200bnot \u200bjust \u200babout \u200blooking \u200bat \u200byour \u200bsales \u200bdashboard \u200bonline \u200btoday \u200band \u200bseeing \u200bhow \u200byou&#8217;re \u200bdoing \u200btoday, or this hour. \u200bIt \u200bis \u200bnot \u200babout \u200bsitting \u200bdown \u200band \u200bsaying, \u200bwhat \u200bcan \u200bI \u200bget \u200bdone \u200bin \u200ba \u200bmonth? \u200bIt&#8217;s \u200babout what \u200bcan \u200byou \u200bget \u200bdone \u200bwith \u200ba \u200blong-term \u200bcommitment? \u200bEven \u200bif \u200balong \u200bthe \u200bway, \u200byou \u200bhit \u200bbumps \u200band \u200bthings \u200bthat \u200bcome \u200bup \u200bthat \u200bare \u200bgoing \u200bto \u200bslow \u200byou \u200bdown, \u200bthat \u200bare \u200bgoing \u200bto \u200bdistract \u200byou \u200bfrom \u200bthe \u200bwriting.<\/p>\n<h3>They key is remembering that this is a marathon, and not a sprint.<\/h3>\n<p>\u200bWhat \u200bare \u200bthose \u200blong-term \u200bgoals, \u200band \u200bhow \u200bcommitted \u200bare \u200byou \u200bto \u200bgetting \u200bthis \u200bdone, no matter how long it takes?<\/p>\n<p>Word by word. Day by day. Month by month. Year by year.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout \u200bour \u200bcareer \u200bas \u200bwriters, \u200bwe \u200bcan \u200bhave \u200bsuccessful \u200bbooks, \u200band \u200bunsuccessful \u200bbooks. \u200bWe \u200bcan \u200bhave \u200bgreat\u200b \u200bachievements, \u200band we \u200bcan \u200bhave a series of flops \u200balong \u200bthe \u200bway. \u200bI failed to complete the goal for NaNoWriMo several times over the years. But \u200bI \u200bwould \u200bargue \u200bthat \u200bevery \u200bsingle \u200btime I signed up to a project and \u200bcommitted \u200bto \u200bputting \u200bwords \u200bon \u200bpaper, \u200bI wasn\u2019t just continuing to work at \u200bhoning \u200bmy \u200bcraft, \u200byou&#8217;re \u200blearning, \u200bI was also learning more about myself as a writer, and from my errors, from the things that didn\u2019t quite work, I perhaps learned more.<\/p>\n<p>Every time you try something and don\u2019t hit those goals, you\u2019ve learned something new, about what wasn\u2019t working? What did you try that didn\u2019t work? What didn\u2019t you try that you might want to do next time? And hat advice did you follow that just didn\u2019t fit within the way you get things done?<\/p>\n<p>\u200bThere&#8217;s \u200bno \u200bone \u200bway \u200bof \u200bdoing \u200bit. I can\u2019t tell you how. It\u2019s only after trying, after testing, after falling down a few times and learning from that process that you\u2019re going to figure out what doesn\u2019t work, and what might work for YOU.<\/p>\n<h3>\u200b\u200b\u200bSo, \u200bin \u200bconclusion, I \u200bwant \u200bto \u200bremind \u200byou \u200bthat \u200bI \u200bdid \u200bnot \u200bcomplete, or \u200bfinish \u200b\u200bthe \u200b50,000 \u200bwords \u200bthat \u200bI \u200b\u200bcommitted \u200bto \u200bwrite in \u200bNovember \u200b2023.<\/h3>\n<p>\u200bBut \u200bthat \u200bdoesn&#8217;t \u200bmean \u200bI&#8217;m going to let that define me. It\u2019s just one bump on a long and winding road.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m \u200bgoing \u200bto \u200bsee \u200bthe \u200bwork \u200bthat \u200bI \u200b<strong><em>did<\/em><\/strong> \u200bdo \u200bthis \u200bmonth \u200b\u200bas \u200ba \u200bstep \u200bforward, \u200bas \u200bone more \u200badditional \u200bstep \u200bforward \u200bfor \u200bme \u200bas \u200ba \u200bwriter. \u200bI&#8217;m \u200bgoing \u200bto \u200bsee \u200bevery \u200bsingle \u200bthing \u200bthat \u200bI \u200bdid \u200brelated \u200bto \u200bgetting \u200bthose \u200bwords \u200bon \u200bpaper, \u200bwhich \u200bwas \u200bthe \u200bcommitment \u200band \u200bthe \u200boutlining \u200band \u200bthe \u200bplanning \u200band \u200ball \u200bof \u200bthose \u200bthings \u200bthat \u200bgo \u200binto \u200bmaking \u200ba \u200bbook \u200bwhat \u200bit \u200bis. \u200bI\u2019m going to look at all \u200bof \u200bthose \u200bthings \u200bas \u200blittle \u200bsuccesses \u200balong \u200bthe \u200bway.<\/p>\n<p>We \u200bspend \u200btoo \u200bmuch \u200btime \u200bcounting \u200bthe \u200bfailures \u200band \u200bthe \u200bthings \u200bwe \u200bdidn&#8217;t \u200bquite \u200bget \u200bright \u200bor \u200bthat we \u200bdidn&#8217;t \u200bfinish; \u200band \u200bnot \u200benough \u200btime \u200b\u200benjoying \u200bthe \u200bfact \u200bthat \u200bwe \u200bactually \u200bdid \u200bget \u200ba \u200blittle \u200bsomething \u200bdone \u200band \u200bare that much \u200bcloser to the end goal, and perhaps a little better for the stumbles and the things we learned from the stumbles along the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bLike \u200bI \u200bsaid, \u200bday \u200bby \u200bday, \u200bword \u200bby \u200bword.<\/p>\n<p>Completing a journey of one thousand miles begins not just with that single physical step, but the internal step that is first taken when you commit to making that journey.<\/p>\n<p>The act of completing a novel does require words, a huge number of them, but similarly, it all begins with the commitment, with setting out that goal.<\/p>\n<p>So if you set that goal, regardless of where you ended up on the trail as December 1<sup>st<\/sup> arrived, I hope that you celebrating the important fact that you did take that daring first and most critical step.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A letter from our own Mark Leslie Lefe\u200bbvre for everyone who didn&#8217;t hit 50K this NaNoWriMo.
