There are more marketing strategies out there than you could try in a lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a confusing landscape to navigate, especially if you\u2019re an indie author newbie looking to promote your first book. How much should you spend? And which paid ads are most worthwhile?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paid ads have their place, and we\u2019ll dedicate an entire post to them in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you don\u2019t have to spend money to get some excellent traction, especially if you\u2019re just starting out as an indie author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the best free marketing tips we\u2019ve picked up over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1: Don\u2019t underestimate the power of personal relationships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the successful writers we\u2019ve interviewed base their marketing strategies on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hypebot.com\/hypebot\/2017\/11\/1000-true-fans-theory-explained.html\">1,000 true fans theory.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The underlying premise is a simple one: win the hearts of 1,000 loyal readers, and they will support your work for an entire career. They\u2019ll buy everything you write, tell their family and friends about you, and essentially create a ripple effect on your behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, they\u2019ll provide free marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.draft2digital.com\/blog\/building-a-thriller-career-with-ernest-dempsey-self-publishing-insiders-ep036\/\"><strong>Author Ernest Dempsey<\/strong><\/a><strong> believes that the best marketing is relationships, and he\u2019s not alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe old school ways of a handshake and a clap on the back \u2026 that\u2019s the best way to do business. And in this digital age, we\u2019ve kind of lost that a little bit. There\u2019s a million YouTubers, but how engaged are they really with their fans?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, for most authors, it isn\u2019t possible\u2014or even desirable, hot on the heels of COVID-19\u2014to shake hands with 1,000 of your readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the premise holds up even if you only engage from the other side of a screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Develop a personal relationship with your readers, and nurture that relationship early and often. Put time and energy into your <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.draft2digital.com\/blog\/building-your-author-platform-with-roland-denzel-self-publishing-insiders-ep019\/\"><strong>author platform<\/strong><\/a><strong>, and make sure you\u2019re reaching out to your audience (even if it\u2019s tiny) when you have nothing to sell.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dempsey says, \u201cAt the end of the day, a lot of people are still focused on the getting part, which is getting [an email address] so they can extract money from a reader.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He reminds writers that it\u2019s important to focus on what you\u2019re <em>giving<\/em> as an author, not what you\u2019re <em>getting<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s how to develop 1,000 true fans\u2014and it doesn\u2019t cost a dime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2: Write a lead magnet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the very first episode of Self-Publishing Insiders, BookFunnel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.draft2digital.com\/blog\/reaching-more-readers-with-damon-courtney-from-bookfunnel-self-publishing-insiders-ep-001\/\">Damon Courtney<\/a> made a point of recommending lead magnets as a free marketing tool for new authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He even went so far as to say that it\u2019s the first thing you should do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A lead magnet is essentially a free piece of work that you\u2019ll give away to readers in exchange for their email address. Once they\u2019re on your mailing list, you have a free (or close to free) means of getting in touch with people who have actively expressed an interest in your work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the marketing world, that\u2019s like gold. \u201cThe best traffic that you could possibly get is always going to be organic traffic,\u201d Courtney says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So don\u2019t miss opportunities for calls to action. Whether you have one book or a multi-book series, put a blurb in the back that prompts readers to download a free story. Of course, you\u2019ll need their email address to send them that story\u2014so everyone gets something they want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These kinds of value exchanges, where readers get the benefit of reading your work for free, and you get a free way to market to them, are the best \u201cbang for your buck\u201d\u2014even when the \u201cbuck\u201d is your time and energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3: Network<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the \u201cbefore times,\u201d our biggest recommendation for networking would have been to attend an in-person writing conference or networking event if you possibly could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We still recommend doing that, if you\u2019re comfortable\u2014these events are coming back slowly in 2021.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that\u2019s not free, and it\u2019s also not the only way to meet other writers and forge relationships within the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How best to do this if you don\u2019t know anyone else in your local area who writes? You guessed it: social media.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Join Facebook groups dedicated to your genre or to writing in general. We highly recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.draft2digital.com\/blog\/collaborative-writing-with-craig-martelle-self-publishing-insiders-ep008\/\">Craig Martelle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.draft2digital.com\/blog\/building-an-indie-publishing-empire-with-michael-and-judith-anderle-self-publishing-insiders-ep028\/\">Michael Anderle<\/a>\u2019s \u201c20 Books to 50k\u201d Facebook group as a place to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One caveat before you dive in, though: don\u2019t join groups looking to sell and promote your work. That will probably do more harm than good\u2014and in some cases, will get you ejected before you can even say \u201clead magnet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of joining these groups should be getting to know the readers and writers in your genre. (Back to those personal relationships again.)
