There never seems to be quite enough time in the day, does there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, we tell other people (and ourselves) that we \u201cdon\u2019t have enough time to write,\u201d though we somehow seem to find the time to watch full seasons of <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>. (Funny how that works.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, what we really mean is that we haven\u2019t prioritized sitting down to write every day. It hurts to say, but it's the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how busy your life is, there\u2019s probably a publishing indie author out there who\u2019s got a similar schedule and still finds the time to write. We\u2019ve interviewed several who are so productive that they seem to have found a wormhole in the space-time continuum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But unless there\u2019s something they aren\u2019t telling us, they have the same 24-hour day to work with as everyone else. They just use their writing time in a way that makes them exponentially more efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you\u2019re looking to make the most of your writing time, read on for a few of our favorite time management tips geared specifically toward writers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Batch like tasks together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One tip that we hear a lot is to batch your tasks, so that you\u2019re doing the same <em>type<\/em> of activity for big pockets of time. Adjust the exact length of a \u201cbig pocket of time\u201d to fit your schedule, but the authors we\u2019ve spoken to seem to target anywhere between two hours and half a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you have an hour in the morning to write, batching means spending that full hour doing just one thing, like working on a first draft.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that you <em>aren\u2019t <\/em>checking your email, working on a draft, editing a previous chapter, and writing Facebook ad copy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because there\u2019s a \u201cmental cost\u201d to context-switching. Studies show that shifting rapidly between different tasks can eat up as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/research\/action\/multitask#:~:text=Meyer%20has%20said%20that%20even,percent%20of%20someone's%20productive%20time.\">40% of your productive time<\/a>. But when you focus solely on one task, you don\u2019t need to consistently re-orient around the new thing you\u2019re doing in a given moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.draft2digital.com\/blog\/the-three-story-method-with-j-thorn-self-publishing-insiders-ep032\/\">J Thorn<\/a> takes this a step further and \u201cthemes\u201d entire days. For examples, he sets aside Mondays as podcasting days, so on those days he doesn\u2019t write or do client work. He only podcasts. Tuesdays are his drafting days. All he does on Tuesdays is write first drafts, whether that\u2019s for one project or several.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tinker with the formula to make it work for you, but the key theme is to pick a length of time where you can focus on a single task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use a timer to enforce focus blocks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.draft2digital.com\/blog\/from-idea-to-books-movies-and-more-with-gregg-mcbride-self-publishing-insiders-ep037\/\">Gregg McBride<\/a> told us that the secret to his productivity is staying focused for a set amount of time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also batches his tasks, and arranges his workspace so that nothing else gets in the way during his writing time. \u201cLet\u2019s say I\u2019m going to write for two hours, but be very, very focused,\u201d he says. \u201cI can get a lot done.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Critical to this approach is turning off notifications: silence your phone, shut down your email and instant messaging programs, and shut your office door (or put headphones on to let your family know you\u2019re working. Then give 100% of your attention to a single task\u2014like writing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gregg even goes a step further and disconnects his laptop from the internet entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.draft2digital.com\/blog\/building-an-author-career-with-christian-a-brown-self-publishing-insiders-ep040\/\">Christian Brown<\/a> agrees. He told us that he takes a timer and sets it for two hours. \u201cIf you don\u2019t have two hours, that\u2019s fine\u2014set it for an hour,\u201d he says. And you just sit there and you write.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s how he wrote 50,000 words\u2014an entire novel, for those of you keeping score\u2014in 27 days, a pace he told us he hasn\u2019t done in ages. \u201cThat\u2019s how you find the time,\u201d he says. \u201cYou make the time. You create systems of organization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no hard and fast rule for how long you must focus to be productive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two hours works for Gregg and Christian, but you may do better with three hours, or even 10-20 minutes. Time management is a process specific to each author. That doesn\u2019t sound like a lot, but we know authors who have written entire novels in 10-minute pockets of time. It all adds up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pick a working talisman<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.draft2digital.com\/blog\/the-author-industry-inside-and-out-self-publishing-insiders-ep042\/\">Kevin Tumlinson and Mark Lefevbre<\/a> recently shared a peek into their lives as authors (as compared to their lives as D2D employees). As it turns out, both of them have developed physical cues that tell them\u2014and their families\u2014when it\u2019s time to buckle down and write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark uses his clothes: D2D working wear is usually a sport coat over a t-shirt, but for writing he skips the coat and surrounds himself with skulls and skeletons. (He does write horror, after all.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kevin used to have a \u201cwriting hat,\u201d a baseball cap he\u2019d only wear while writing. These days, he uses AirPods to disconnect from the outside world and focus on his work as an author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether your talisman is an object or a means of optimizing your focus, it helps to implement some kind of physical shift from your \u201cregular self\u201d to your \u201cwriter self,\u201d like Superman changing clothes in the telephone booth. It cues your brain that it\u2019s time to work, and supports those focused blocks of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your best time management tip?
