Many of us dream of a true writing career. We envision our lives as successful writers: the Instagram-worthy photos of the desk where we release our creative genius, the legions of adoring fans, the critical acclaim \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s just one problem. The process of actually writing<\/em> can feel scary as hell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With all of the information and advice available online, it\u2019s not surprising that we get overwhelmed. That sense of having no clue exactly where and how to start is why many of us never turn our dream of being a writer into an actual writing career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But don\u2019t despair. There are simple actions you can take today to change your writerly status from \u201cit\u2019s complicated\u201d to \u201cprofessional author.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are our top three picks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#1: Get your inspiration on demand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Michael LaRonn<\/a> has kept what he calls \u201ca notebook full of inspiration\u201d for the past decade. It\u2019s how he generates \u201cinspiration on demand\u201d whenever he has time to write. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, Michael says, \u201cIf I\u2019m talking to you, and you come up with something that\u2019s a really interesting idea, or a really interesting image, or an interesting idea for a story, I capture it in the Evernote app on my phone.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point, he\u2019s got hundreds (if not thousands) of different notes that serve as inspiration whenever his muse isn\u2019t in a creative mood.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We all lead busy lives, and it\u2019s easy to use the excuse of feeling uninspired to skip writing for the day and do something\u2014anything\u2014else instead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference between a wannabe author and an Author with a capital A is the discipline to sit down and write every day, whether they\u2019re feeling inspired or not. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping a notebook of inspiration is an excellent way to capture those little moments that make you think, \u201cwhat a great story,\u201d and to bring them to mind when you need them most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#2: Create an atomic daily writing habit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise, but it bears repeating: the thing that makes someone a writer is the act of writing.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writing regularly\u2014ideally, every day\u2014is what separates writers from people who just talk about writing. This is the foundation of your writing career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Author J. Thorn<\/a> recommends the book Atomic Habits <\/em>by James Clear as a great place to start with building your daily writing habit. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clear writes that making small, incremental changes is the key to building a new habit. By removing as many decisions as possible from the mix, you lower the barrier to entry between your current self and the version of you that\u2019s writing daily, going to the gym, or participating in any other desirable habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, if you want to write first thing in the morning, you could lay out everything you need on your desk or dining room table the night before. Put out your notebook, pens, coffee mug, laptop, favorite cardigan, headphones . . . Whatever gets you in the zone and ready to write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That way, when you get up the next morning, you don\u2019t have to spend time deciding whether or not you\u2019ll write. If you put your gear in the way of something you know you\u2019ll do (like eat breakfast), you\u2019ll even have to make a conscious effort not <\/em>to write by moving your writing supplies out of the way first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea is to eliminate decision fatigue and make it as easy as possible to get your behind in that chair every morning without <\/strong>deciding <\/em><\/strong>to do it. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a misconception that you need willpower, and willpower will then create these systems,\u201d says J. Thorn. \u201cJames Clear says it\u2019s the opposite. If you put the systems in place, that\u2019s what builds your willpower.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#3: Start a newsletter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s never too early to start building your author platform\u2014even if you haven\u2019t written anything you can sell yet. BookFunnel\u2019s Damon Courtney<\/a> advises new authors to set up a newsletter and start adding people early. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe you\u2019ve never published a thing, and the only people who\u2019d opt to join your newsletter are friends and family. That\u2019s okay! You can still send something out every week or everything month to remind them (and yourself) that you\u2019re a writer now, and you\u2019ve got irons in the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first piece you\u2019ll write will be what the marketing world calls a \u201clead magnet\u201d\u2014a free downloadable short that serves as both a sample of your work and an incentive for people to subscribe to your newsletter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lead magnet doesn\u2019t need to take very long to write, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt can be a short story, 2,000 or 3,000 words,\u201d says Courtney. \u201cIt can be a novella \u2026 Something that you can write in just a day or two. Even if you\u2019re slow, you can write a short story in a day or two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then offer up your short piece of prose for free, whether that\u2019s on BookFunnel, on social media, or anywhere else you can think of. The goal is to accumulate email addresses and start building a newsletter readership for your budding writing career.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may seem too small to matter now, but every person who reads your newsletter knows other people who also read. Before you know it, you\u2019ll be well on your way to reaching hundreds or thousands of people who enjoy reading your work, and\u2014by the time you write that novel\u2014will gladly pay for the privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
